MindComet is Asking for Your Help

 <date>1281655433</date>

We have have recently submitted to give a talk at the South by SouthWest Interactive Conference (SXSWi) to be held next year in Austin, TX.

The title of our presentation is Metrics for Social Media: The Net Promoter Score. We will be focused on addressing 5 key questions concerning social media:

How do you measure Social Media?

Can you accurately measure customer sentiment?

What is the Net Promoter Score?

Why should I consider the Net Promoter Score in my social media efforts?

What are some “real world” examples of the Net Promoter Score in practice?

To get accepted to speak at SXSWi, potential speakers need to submit a presentation which is then voted on via crowd-sourcing. The dates for voting are Wednesday, August 11th until Friday, August 27th.

Currently there are 2,346 proposals for consideration and SXSWi will only accept the top 200 ideas that get the most votes - so every vote counts.

That’s where you come in

We’re asking each and everyone of you to vote for this presentation when you have a moment.

I know talking about metrics can be a bit boring but identifying a proper metric of “customer loyalty” is a hot topic right now and we would add to this conversation with some of the biggest names in the industry.

To vote, you will need to create an account with SXSW (http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/users/register) - it only takes 2-3 minutes, you don’t have to be attending to vote, and we promise that they won’t SPAM you.

Once registered, simply sign in and go to the following URL: http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/ideas/view/8109 and cast your vote. Its that simple and we thank you for it!

If for some reason you can’t find our proposal:

The Category is “Community”

The tags are “measurement”, “metrics”, and “social media”

The Organizer is “Mark Krupinski”

Again, thank you for your vote. We really appreciate it.

Cheers,

How to setup a free brand monitoring program

 <date>1280528266</date>

What is Brand Monitoring?

The proliferation of easy-to-use tools in the social web has empowered anyone, with an Internet connection, to participate in a social dialogue and share their opinion about a topic, person or brand. These social dialogues, which are typically spread across a vast web of disparate systems and platforms, can provide consumer insight and market intelligence, as well as enable organizations to proactively identify and address issues as they arise. All that is required to reap the benefits is a plan for gathering social dialogues relevant to your brand. This gathering of relevant social dialogues is called Brand Monitoring. However, due to the sheer number of social dialogues and locations that these dialogues happen, it’s not feasible to monitor them without leveraging technology.

There are a variety of commercial platforms, which have been developed specifically for the purpose of brand monitoring. Platforms like Radian6 (my favorite) consume large amounts of data and through keyword filtering, expose conversations relevant to you and your brand. However, these platforms are not free. In this blog post, I’m going to so you how to setup a basic brand monitoring program using freely available tools and platforms. This is a great starting point for anyone who is diving into social media, that doesn’t yet have the budget to engage a company like Radian6.

More often than not, content in the social web is available for syndication via RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds; making the information portable to multiple platforms (ex. laptops, mobile devices, etc.), easy to broadcast and also easy to find. There are a variety of publicly accessible “social search engines” that scour the social web and index the content they find. These “social search engines” are the tools which we will leverage to create a free, yet very effective brand monitoring program.

How to build a Successful and Free Brand Monitoring Program

Below I’ve included a video tutorial produced by MindComet new media rockstar, Art Wilbur. To follow along, you’re going to need a couple of things.

Access to an RSS reader, if you don’t already have one. I prefer Google Reader and will be using it for this tutorial. It’s simple to use and has a number of impressive features.

Access to Google Docs. Just any old spreadsheet software won’t work. As part of this tutorial, we’ve provided you with a pre-canned spreadsheet (via Google Docs) for use in implementing your own brand monitoring program.

Other tools referenced include FeedShow OPML Builder, Google Alerts, Gowalla RSS Tool.

The flip-side of crowdsourcing

 <date>1277312674</date>

I love crowdsourcing.

The concept is simple, yet it’s a disruptive social tool which, if coupled with great ideas, will bring about powerful applications. The business world has already latched on the crowdsourcing with great success.

* Starbucks is making the in-store experience more enjoyable by leveraging insights from My Starbucks Idea for product and business innovation.

* You can rest assure that your next online t-shirt purchase won’t be a flop because Threadless lets the community decide on which t-shirt designs should be produced.

* Product innovation is taking a leap forward through Hypios. It’s a marketplace where companies can broadcast internal R&D problems to an outside network of expert problem solvers.

But are there downsides to crowssourcing? Can it be used for nefarious purposes?

The answer is yes. It already is.

The Iranian government recently launched a crowdsourcing site that will help identify members of last year’s election protests. The site, Gerdab.ir, displays photos of “dissidents” and allows the Iranian public to collectively identify and report the identity of these people to the government.
